In this executive forum, we will discuss the role of internal consultants within a large organization, what skills are essential, and how to maximize your impact.
First, we’ll distinguish between the roles of internal and external consultants and how the two potentially work with each other and engage with line clients. Second, we’ll highlight some skills that determine success as an internal consultant. In this section, we’ll focus on skills related to engaging with clients and the critical thinking skills necessary for internal consultants. Finally, we’ll offer some tips and techniques for improving your effectiveness as an internal consultant.
Here are some questions we’ll discuss in the forum:
- What is an internal consultant, and what do internal consultants do?
- How do internal consultants differ from external consultants? In what ways is their work similar or dissimilar?
- What factors determine whether a company engages an internal resource or goes to the outside for help?
- What skills set up an internal consultant for success? How might these skills differ from external consultants?
- Conversely, what “derailers” might get in the way of an internal consultant’s success?
- How does an internal consultant engage with stakeholders?
- What are the best ways to bring others along during a consulting project?
- What tips and techniques would be helpful to maximize one’s impact as an internal consultant?
- What did you learn at UTD that set you up for success, and what advice would you give current students on how to maximize the program?
The guest for this executive forum will be Jonathan Villareal. Jonathan is an executive with Credit Human Federal Credit Union and has a passion for talent and organizational performance consulting and translating strategy across products and services. His background includes deep experience in financial services operational and technological management, along with experience as an entrepreneur and director of a family business. Through these experiences, Jonathan has honed his business acumen skills for working with systems, leading and developing teams to deliver innovative products and services, and supporting the development and implementation of human capital strategy through internal consultative practices. Jonathan has an M.S. in Leadership and Organizational Development from The University of Texas at Dallas and a B.B.A. in Management from The University of Texas at San Antonio.
